Route 206 in Hillsborough Says "Spring 2027." NJDOT's Own Schedule Tells a Longer Story.

The hydrant in front of IHOP at 260 Route 206 has been switched, and the water meter there has been raised. Comcast ran roughly 7,000 linear feet of new wire through the corridor and scheduled the transfer to new poles for August 31. Most of the commercial and residential driveways between Doctors Way and Valley Road have been repaved. If you drive past the Opie Road intersection every day, those small changes make the project look close to finished.

It isn't close. The New Jersey Department of Transportation's project page, updated September 29, 2026, gives spring 2027 as the scheduled completion. The milestone table on that same page lists southbound widening, the final median barrier, and final paving as starting in spring 2027, and it doesn't expect the Stage 2 drainage system to finish until fall 2027. The northbound side is the half you've watched for years. The half that changes how you turn into a driveway hasn't begun.

What the $42 million is buying

The contract widens Route 206 to two lanes in each direction. It runs from just south of Doctors Way to about half a mile north of Valley Road, with a concrete barrier down the middle. U-turns will move to new jughandles at Triangle Road, at Valley Road, and near Camplain Road. A new bridge over a tributary to Royce Brook will carry a new Valley Road connection that meets Route 206 opposite Lake Drive. Falcon Road is being regraded to match the new highway level.

That median is the change that will affect daily driving the most. In its June coverage, MyCentralJersey described the project as one that will "limit left turns along the highway." Officials said the goal is to reduce crashes from turning traffic by sending drivers to signalized intersections and jughandles. Today you can cross oncoming traffic to reach a business on the other side. Once the barrier is in, you'll drive to a light or loop through a jughandle instead.

The scorecard, by stage

NJDOT splits the work into three stages. Here's where each piece stands as of the September 29, 2026 update:

Stage Work Status
1 Noise wall, southbound between Farm Road and Doctors Way Completed May 2022
1 Culvert replacement Completed December 2022
1 Northbound widening, drainage, signals, Triangle/Falcon and Camplain jughandles In progress, finish spring 2027
1 Gas and electric utilities In progress, finish fall 2026
1 Upgraded lighting Not started, start fall 2026
2 Valley Road to Lake Drive bridge In progress, finish fall 2026
2 Bridge utilities In progress, finish winter 2026
2 Southbound widening, signals, lighting, second culvert Not started, start spring 2027
2 Drainage system In progress, finish fall 2027
3 Median barrier and final paving, both directions Not started, start spring 2027

Read top to bottom, the table shows Stage 1 work running into spring 2027 while Stage 2's biggest piece hasn't started. Upgraded lighting is the one Stage 1 item still waiting to start, and it's slated for this fall. The bridge has moved fastest. Its beams were finished in August, and the deck was poured starting August 21, with about 14 meters left for a second pour the following week. NJDOT marked the deck complete in September, but its page gives no opening date for the new Valley Road connection.

The ramp that was supposed to reopen this fall

The northbound ramp to Falcon Road and Triangle Road closed June 8, 2026, so crews could build the new northbound lane and regrade the ground around it. The closure was expected to last through late fall 2026. Until it reopens, the detour works like this:

  1. Heading to Falcon Road: stay on Route 206 northbound past the closed ramp, turn right on Opie Road, then left on Falcon Road.
  2. Heading to Triangle Road: stay on Route 206 northbound, turn right on Opie Road, then right on Falcon Road, and cross Route 206 at the traffic signal to reach Triangle Road.

This isn't the first time this ramp has closed. TAPinto Hillsborough reported in December 2024 that the same northbound Falcon/Triangle ramp was due to reopen by 6 a.m. on December 17, 2024. When the Triangle/Falcon jughandle is finished, now listed for spring 2027, this intersection will work differently again. As of this week, no reopening date for the current closure has been announced. Before you count on the ramp, check 511NJ, which NJDOT points drivers to for real-time conditions and notes that timing can shift with weather.

Why every finish date has moved

Spring 2027 is the latest in a series of completion targets. Here's how the date has moved:

  • March 2021: Phase I began, with completion expected at the end of 2024. A 2021 Patch report put the target at summer 2024.
  • June 5, 2021: The Peter J. Biondi Route 206 Bypass, a separate project, opened to traffic while the Doctors Way to Valley Road widening was already underway.
  • April 2023: According to NJDOT officials, the department halted the work after a dispute over a safety concern with the original contractor.
  • 2024: TAPinto Hillsborough reported that Roman Asphalt Corporation, based in Kearny, had been selected as the new contractor.
  • Mid-2025: Patch reported an end-of-2026 finish. A month later, CentralJersey.com reported that officials expected completion in late fall 2026.
  • September 29, 2026: NJDOT's page shows spring 2027 overall, with drainage work running into fall 2027.

The April 2023 stoppage and the 2024 contractor change came between the original 2024 target and every later forecast. The current table also leaves little room for a spring finish. It lists southbound widening, the median barrier and final paving as starting in spring 2027, the same season given for overall completion, with drainage running through fall 2027.

What the corridor looks like through next year

Put the stages in order and the next twelve months roughly follow this sequence. Expect upgraded lighting work to start this fall, and the bridge and its utilities wrapping up between fall and winter. Next spring, southbound widening starts along with the remaining signal, lighting, and culvert work, and the median barrier and final paving begin. NJDOT's table carries the drainage work into fall 2027.

The southbound side has already seen some early work. In late August, Mayor Catherine Payne shared NJDOT's report that ITS conduit installation was underway from Doctors Way to Independence Drive and from Opie Road to IHOP on the southbound side. Sidewalk and curb installation was nearly done across the project, and crews were seeding and haying for landscaping. That work prepares the ground. The full southbound widening is still listed as not started.

Overnight work has come before, and could again. In April 2026, Patch Hillsborough reported a northbound stoppage between Doctors Way and Valley Road from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday so crews could move construction drums and widen the work zone. Southbound widening is listed to start next spring, so watch for advisories covering that side of the road.

For a household in Hillsborough, that means the 2027 version of your Route 206 routine will look different from today's. That includes the trip to IHOP at Opie Road, the turn toward Triangle Road, and getting onto Valley Road once the new connection opposite Lake Drive opens. The jughandles at Triangle Road, Valley Road and near Camplain Road are listed to finish in spring 2027, and the median barrier is listed to start that same season.
